What’s new in ‘A New Legacy?’

In just about three days the highly anticipated sequel 1996’s Space Jam is set to hit theaters and HBO Max.

On July 16, viewers will be able to see LeBron James and all their favorite looney tunes in Space Jam: A New Legacy.

We get to watch Don Cheadle and Jim Carrey work their magic, alongside a host of basketball greats including Anthony Davis, Nneka Ogwumike and Klay Thompson. With star power like this it’s anticipated to be a real summer blockbuster.

While A New Legacy rides on a continuous wave of 90’s nostalgia, fans of the original may notice some changes.

Judging by the trailer it looks like a majority of the movie will use Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) in favor of Traditional (2D) animation. While CGI does allow for beautiful scenery and dramatic action, viewers are hopeful that it can bring the same whimsy as 2D.

Zendaya in film, too

The ever popular Lola Bunny will be voiced by seasoned actor Zendaya. Lola also received a redesign for this film, which has some fans up in arms about the characters future. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Derek Lawrence, Zendaya had no idea people would feel so strongly about her taking on the role or the new look.

“She’s special to a lot of people and their childhoods … so I get that sense of protection … I felt really grateful just to have the opportunity.”

Pepe Le Pew was also left victim to change, and that change came in the form full on removal. Pepe received the boot after being called out for less than savory behavior by New York Times Columnist Charles M. Blow. This is yet another development that has audiences divided.

This may just be another movie to some, but for others it’s a big deal. After waiting nearly 25 years it’s understandable why people may be weary about these changes.

Despite this, the movie still deserves a chance to stand on its own merit.

All we can do now is wait and watch as Space Jam: A New Legacy becomes available on July 16th.
