As another hurricane season approaches, pet owners should prepare

Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on June 1, and Floridians are encouraged to prepare ahead of time.

Colorado State University released its annual hurricane seasonal forecast for the 2021 season and a more active than normal season is ahead for the Atlantic basin – similar to 2020.

Jackie Ingraffia, pet trainer and owner of New Habits Dog Training repeatedly emphasizes the importance of owners being aware of their own behaviors during storms to help keep pets calm and at ease.

“One of the things that I teach to all my clients is that you’ve got to watch your energy because dogs do feed off of energy,” Ingraffia said.

Among the essential items to bring with your pet as you evacuate for a storm, Ingraffia highlighted other key elements to consider.

“Have essentials packed, have a plan for how [your pet] will go to the bathroom, have more than enough of their medication if they need it” she said. “If you evacuate, make sure not to leave your pets behind.”
