Palm Harbor is a small-town on the coast of Florida that does not have a traditional mayor.

The Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce President, Dean Maratea, says “So Palm Harbor is an unincorporated area of Pinellas county, so there’s no city hall and there’s no official elected mayor like normal cities have”.

Unlike most towns, Palm Harbor has what is called an “Honorary Mayor”.

Each candidate represents a charity, where then citizens donate to the charity to cast a vote. This gives the chance for people to vote as many times as they want. Every donation must be at least one dollar for it to count as a vote.

Candidates win based on whoever raised the most money for their charity.

This year’s Honorary Mayor is Jenny Goad. Goads charity of choice was Palm Harbor Cares, a charity that supports local nonprofits.

Goad says, “We were able to provide commercial refrigeration for feast food pantry. And for feeding the fosters, we were able to provide 150 camp scholarships for the greater Palm Harbor YMC.”
