Three longtime friends once had a dream for a vegan-based dessert bar. Now that dream has become a reality with the Tru Vegan Creamery.
Founded by Melody Snyder-Owens, Allison Clebert, and Tenisha Patterson-Brown, the black-owned business, is a dessert-themed restaurant for people with dairy-free diets. The origination of Tru Vegan, goes all the way back to 2017, according to Patterson-Brown.
“We wanted some dairy free options. The options were super limited and we just didn’t understand why big brands were not tapping into this niche market. So, whether you were lactose intolerant or just choose to be dairy free, we decided to create a brand that was going to fit that niche,” she said.
The creamery’s range of items, such as Lux Slushes, Tru Scoops and V Shakes (their substitute for milkshakes) were immensely satisfying to customers. Tampa resident Joseph Hicks was ecstatic about the establishment, stating “It’s definitely going to be a new stop after the skate park for me now from now on.”
People from all over Florida showed up to the restaurant’s opening on Feb. 26. The opening extended to people outside the state. Some folks also came from Atlanta and up-north. The line was so long that it wrapped around the building, it was a far bigger success than the trio could’ve ever imagined.
