Editor’s Note: Students in the Fall 2020 Advanced Reporting class produced stories about Tampa Bay neighborhoods, people and other places for a series called On the Street Where You Live.

A college campus is a very special kind of neighborhood. Like in most others, you are surrounded by people. But in this one, most of them are your age. Like in others, everyone is trying to get by. But in this one, there is an ambition that comes with learning and seeing things for the first time.

The Tampa campus at the University of South Florida offers an opportunity for students living there to form connections with those around them—with whom they immediately share something in common. Like in other neighborhoods, there are things most USF bulls have done. But in this one, it’s not only places and routines people share, but an awkward, fundamental stage of life.
