The Hillsborough County School board met on Tuesday to discuss the settlement with the electronic cigarette company, Juul Labs Inc. where they will receive approximately $7.7 million.
Many school districts and states are involved in the lawsuit detailing the misleading marketing techniques of the company. Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh released a statement on Dec. 6 after the company reached settlement.
The initial agreement of Juul Labs Inc. sorting out multiple lawsuits in December 2020 is now reaching Hillsborough County schools with a large settlement plan.
School board attorney Jim Porter said the school district will get three payments in subsequent years. After approval the final numbers will be determined. The exact number will be based off of size of the school, district and amount of participation time.
While there is no restriction on how the funds are used, the school board will plan to meet again to determine how they will be allocated.
