High School Cemetery
Today Hillsborough County Public Schools released the findings of the King High School cemetery search.
Records indicate that there may have been over 250 burials on the grounds. 145 graves were discovered at the Tampa high school through the use of a ground-penetrating radar. The radar was first brought to King High School in October.
Most of the people buried in the graves were African American. Many were infants or young children.
The findings have been turned over to the county medical examiner and the state archaeologist.
They will have 30 days to decide if they will keep control of the one-acre area of land or return it to the school district.
The district plans on tearing down the school’s agricultural workshop, which may be on top of additional graves.
New York Times Subscription Denied
The Citrus County commission rejected a digital subscription to the New York Times requested by librarians.
Supporters of this decision criticize the New York Times for what they describe as a liberal bias and anti-President Donald Trump agenda.
All five Citrus County commissioners rejected the request. The four commissioners who agreed to be interviewed by The Chronicle said they do not read the New York Times. The Citrus County commission is technically nonpartisan.
Other supporters of the decision believe the annual digital subscription cost too much at $2,700. The Citrus County library system spends around $3,000 on an annual print subscription to the Times.
Citrus County libraries serve around 70,000 patrons
Supervisor of Elections
The Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections wants the community to participate in the 2020 elections.
At an open house today, visitors toured the elections warehouse and interacted with a new electronic ballot system.
An effort is also underway to encourage businesses to give employees time off to work the polls.
Hillsborough county is the fourth largest county in Florida and has more than 800 thousand registered voters.
