Former Vice President Joe Biden rallied for the Democratic candidates in Florida on Oct. 22, 2018. He was joined by Andrew Gillum and Senator Bill Nelson at the University of South Florida.

Biden claimed that the only way to protect the environment is to vote for Nelson.

“The governor, who is now trying to win Senate, doesn’t even believe in climate change,” said Biden

Biden also spoke about Gillum, the current mayor of Tallahassee.

“Don’t tell me things can’t change,” said Biden. “Don’t tell me this man can’t get elected.”

Biden ended the rally by appealing to college students’ concerns, reiterating his statements about the environment.

“The oceans are warming, the seas are rising, these storms are becoming more and more intense, and more devastating,” said Biden

Early Voting in Hillsborough County

Oct. 22, 2018, was the first day of early voting in Hillsborough County. 20 polling sites are available in the Tampa Bay area. The University of South Florida’s Yuengling Center is the newest voting site this election season.

“Early voting begins at the University of South Florida Oct. 22, Monday, 12 hours a day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and it will be for 14 straight days. So, it runs through the last Sunday before the election,” said Craig Latimer, Supervisor of Elections.

In order to vote early you must be a registered voter.

Double Homicide in Tampa

Forty-two-year-old Tyrone Terell Johnson has been accused of murdering his girlfriend and her 10-year-old son after an argument about football on Sunday.

Johnson started to argue with his girlfriend about changing the channel so he could watch football. Johnson called 911 at 6:47 p.m.  “because he was being attacked.” He told deputies he moved into the master bedroom to start packing and his girlfriend started to yell at him. Johnson messaged his father through Facebook asking to be picked up in the morning.

Johnson fired a handgun after his girlfriend armed herself with a Playstation console. According to Johnson, all the shots happened in the master bedroom. However, there is evidence of gunshots and blood in the young boy’s room.

Johnson is currently being held without bond and is facing multiple charges.

The Pinellas County Health Department asked residents to help prevent the spread of Hepatitis A.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection that leads to liver failure. It usually spreads when a person unknowingly ingests the virus from objects, food, or drinks contaminated by undetected amounts of stool from an infected person. Hepatitis A can also spread from close personal contact with an infected person such as through sex or caring for someone who is ill.

As of Oct. 22, 158 cases have been reported in Florida, 58 of them being in Pinellas County.

“We are on track to report the highest number of hepatitis A cases since 2005,” said Ulyee Choe, DOH-Pinellas director.

Free vaccines are being administered at locations across Pinellas County.
