Ybor City’s rolling legacy pushes forward with new blood in the business

Dawson and Paxton Newman, owners of Brothers Broadleaf, are carrying on their family legacy and improving a rich Latin tradition in Ybor City: cigars.

The Newman brothers have owned and operated Brothers Broadleaf since 2020. They offer their cigar related products at their location in Ybor City and at various other retail locations.

Their product has become socially popular in the Tampa area for people who enjoy fine cigars or engage in other uses for the products. It is marketed for use with legal marijuana.

The two brothers are fourth-generation cigar and blunt wrap makers. Their goal is to offer a high quality product in what they deem to be a market with “lack of quality.”

Dawson and Paxton are the sons of Bobby Newman and descendants of Julius Caeser Newman. The Newman family is world famous for over 120 years of cigar rolling in an industry that once featured 200 factories in Tampa. They now own and operate the last factory rolling in Ybor City.

“For me it means a lot, it’s family tradition. My grandfather used to grow tobacco… . That’s the reason I do this kind of thing” said Dawson Newman.
