Tampa residents swarm to newly reopened Straz Center

The Straz Center in Downtown Tampa will return its live shows in late October.

Group sales manager Spencer Meyers said that he has received many calls since it was announced that people can buy tickets.

“Everybody has been wanting and calling about this [live shows] for months,” said Meyers. “The people I talked to on the phone have just been overwhelmingly happy that this is becoming a real thing again.”

Broadway and local shows make up most of the live events returning to the Straz.

Senior director of communications Paul Bilyeu said that besides how popular Broadway shows are, most people just miss the feeling of being able to experience live shows.

“I don’t even think it’s about the specific show or the specific artist,” said Bilyeu. “I think people just want to be able to sit together in the theater, hear some great music together, and when somebody behind you gasps or claps because they’re so moved by that show or music, that’s what they miss.”

Fans must provide a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination to be admitted into the Straz Center. Face masks are also required at all times during live events.
