Tornado Destruction, Public Safety Grants, a New Rescue Unit and more

Middle School Tornado

A Polk County school will remain closed tomorrow after a tornado ripped the roof off.

Crews got to work today fixing more than a dozen classrooms at Kathleen Middle School. They started clearing out several inches of water left behind after Friday’s storm.

The district is working on setting up portable classrooms to get students back to school as soon as possible.

JOD Public Safety Grants

The Justice Department is announcing $291 million in public safety grants across Florida today.

Eleven million dollars will go to the Tampa Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program. Mayor Jane Castor announced the new federal grant at today’s press conference.

As a police chief, Castor was a big sister for the Bigs in Blue program.

New East Tampa Rescue Unit

Tampa fire rescue is rolling out a new rescue unit at Fire Station 16.

The unit will run during “peak” service hours, which is six days a week from noon to 10 p.m.

The new unit will provide better care and faster service for the community of East Tampa.

This is the first peak rescue unit for the area.

Zillow Buying Tampa Houses

Starting today, real estate giant Zillow will buy Tampa bay homes.

They just launched a new program called Zillow Offers where sellers can get cash offers within two days. After an inspection, homeowners can close in just a week.

With this step, Zillow is joining other instant buying companies like Opendoor and Offerpad.

Meet-and-Grease

A very special meet-and-greet is coming to Tampa.

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are reuniting for a special sing-a-long in December. Olivia tweeted this morning that they will be in Florida for only three nights.

The Tampa performance is on December 14 and tickets go on sale this Friday.
