Swan Safety, Bomb Maker on Trial, Pumpkin Patch

Arrests made on organized thefts

Seven people have been arrested on charges of racketeering in Hillsborough County. The arrests relate to two Florida retail theft rings.

Sheriff Chad Chronister spoke on the thefts at a press conference this morning.

“The task force obtained a search warrant and recovered more than 1,100 pair of brand name shoes, more than 500 bottles of unopened cologne, multiple personal grooming items, clothing, purses and high-end watches, including a Rolex,” Chronister said.

The sheriff’s office recovered almost $200,000 in stolen goods.

Suspected Bomb Maker Denied Bail

A suspected bomb maker will remain in Hillsborough County Jail until her trial.

Circuit Judge Wesley Tibbals denied bail this morning for Michelle Kolts until her case is resolved.

Kolts has been charged with 24 counts of bomb making.

Kolts’ parents notified police on Friday after finding two dozen pipe bombs in their Wimauma home. Her parents say their daughter has a history of mental health problems, including schizophrenia.

An unlikely safety hero

These are the iconic swans of Lakeland and the inspiration for blaze the firefighting swan. The feathery firefighter is featured in a new fire safety coloring book.

Blaze was created by the Lakeland Fire Department and the City of Lakeland. The book is just in time for fire prevention week.

“An important message for kids is to always have two ways out of every room,” said LFD Public Relations and Information Manager Janel Vasallo.

You can download a copy for your kids on the city’s website.

Buy a pumpkin, help save a pet!

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s annual pumpkin patch is now open for business.

You can choose your pumpkin at either the Tampa Bay animal shelter or their location in Hyde Park Village. The HSTB relies on donations and events like this help them serve the community.

You can shop through Halloween and, of course, you can bring along your pet!
