The Lightning Make History
The Tampa Bay Lightning’s Monday night win over the Arizona Coyotes led the Bolts to clinch their first ever President’s Trophy.
The award is given to the team that finishes with the best regular season record. It is the first time in Tampa sports history that a major league team earned this prestigious award.
The Lightning still have nine games left in the postseason to continue their hot streak.
Tampa Robberies
Tampa police are investigating four armed robberies that took place over the course of one night in South Tampa.
The string of robberies started Monday night at a PDQ drive-thru on South Dale Mabry. The suspect pointed a gun at a car waiting in line, then attempted to rob the cashier at the window.
15 minutes later a Circle K was robbed at gunpoint by a suspect with a description matching the perpetrator from the previous robbery. Tampa police believe the same person went on to rob a 7-Eleven and another Circle K a few hours later.
The unidentified suspect escaped with an undetermined amount of cash. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.
Oldsmar Redevelopment
The Oldsmar city council has approved a deal to develop a project on city-owned land. The site is located at the southeast corner of State Street East and Saint Petersburg drive.
The goal is to create a dynamic urban district. This mixed-use development is part of an extension to a proposal for 50 town homes to be built in the area. The project would include retail, offices, residences, and plazas.
The specific details of the construction are still being negotiated and need to be approved by the city council. The mayor of Oldsmar believes the project could be important to redeveloping and reinvigorating the area.
Weed decriminalization
A new Sarasota county proposal looks to decriminalize marijuana. Sarasota City Commissioner Hagen Brody presented the proposal on Monday.
It states anyone caught with 20 grams of weed or less should not be arrested. It would also give officers authority to decide whether to issue civil or criminal citations at their own discretion.
Brody says this will allow law enforcement to focus on more pressing issues facing the community.
MOSI Dino
Just in time for spring break, the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) has opened a new dinosaur exhibit.
The new Dinovations Lab includes a model of a 90-foot Diplodocus, which is one of the largest animals known on Earth, tunnels to crawl through, and hands-on activities for kids such as microscopes and fossils.
A representative of MOSI said, “[The new exhibit] invites guests to explore the world of paleontology and the science of prehistoric life in a base camp setting.”
The museum also offers informational facts about dinosaurs throughout the exhibit, and their goal was to help answer many questions that young dinosaur enthusiasts may have about these creatures.
