The Tampa Museum of Art, found in the Cornelia Corbett Center of downtown Tampa, is set to receive a massive 88 piece donation of Haitian art.

Andre Pierre (Haitian, b. 1914), Erzulie, 1973. Oil on canvas. 37 x 26 inches. Tampa Museum of Art, Gift of the Arthur Albrecht Revocable Trust.

The exhibit is scheduled to be on display come spring of 2024 and also comes with a generous one million dollar gift from the Arthur R. Albrecht Revocable Trust to ensure these pieces are properly taken care of while on display.

Arthur R. Albrecht was a known philanthropist and collector of art on behalf of the country of Haiti.

“Mr. Albrecht built a superb collection surveying the rich cultural themes, landscapes, and communities on the island, and this exhibit will add to the increasingly global and dynamic exhibitions we have available for viewing,” said Michael Tomor, Ph.D., the Penny and Jeff Vinik Executive Director at the Tampa Museum of Art in a press release.

Prefete Duffaut (Haitian, 1923-2012), Magician, c. mid. 1960s. Oil on Masonite. 46 x 24 inches. Tampa Museum of Art, Gift of the Arthur Albrecht Revocable Trust.

“What’s striking about both collections is just how vibrant the art scene is in Haiti. I think a lot of people aren’t aware that they have this long tradition of ritual arts but also this extraordinary history in painting and sculpture,” said Nina Womeldurf, Marketing Director of the Tampa Art Museum.

Complimentary to the exhibit, a publication featuring popular Haitian artists will also be accessible through the museum.

The Tampa Museum of Art has a rich history and has been serving as a landmark of the bay area since the 1920’s.

The Museum announced it’s plan for a $100 million+ Centennial Renovation and Expansion. This expansion is set to give the Museum nearly 56,000 more square feet of space upon completion. This massive enlargement will eventually feature new galleries and exhibits to further bolster the Museum’s identity and diverse portfolio of art.
