Student-Athletes Making Money
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a former Yale baseball Captain, declared his support for a bill that would help student-athletes. This entails university athletes profiting from endorsements deals based around their images.
If the bill gets passed, Florida will become the second state to allow its university athletes to accept endorsement deals. The first to pass this bill was California, just last month.
Current NCAA bylaws prohibit college athletes from benefiting from their name and image to promote and advertise a commercial item.
Temple Terrace Donates Fire Truck to the Bahamas
The City of Temple Terrace and the Temple Terrace Fire Department donated one of their trucks to the Bahamas after the devastation of hurricane Dorian.
Areas such as Abaco Islands and the capital, Marsh Harbor, were hit with a Category 5 Hurricane and are still suffering. They have lost their homes and lives to this Category 5 Hurricane.
Marsh Harbor is where Kathleen Ralph, a Marsh Harbor Primary Dispatcher, and her husband David volunteered for over 25 years. As of right now, the retired fire truck is on its way to Riviera Beach, where it will be sent to the Abaco Islands.
“Marsh Harbor Fire Department had six engines, and only one came through the hurricane and is usable,” Ralph said. “The others got salt-water damage. Someone took one of the engines and stole it.”
Danny Sawyer, a Marsh Harbor Volunteer Fire & Rescue Chief, was pleased to receive the donation of the retired firetruck.
“We suffered major damages in Abaco with results to our fire department trucks, equipment, and building – losing about everything we had,” Sawyer said.
USF Hosts Annual Campus Saftey Day
The University of South Florida and USF Department of Emergency Management hosted its fourth annual USF campus safety day.
The first event was held in 2016, where a few hundred people showed up. The turnout inspired them to host this event annually because of the great turn out. This event is part of the Campus Safety week. Events are held to help USF students and faculty with any harmful situations they may be part of.
Crime prevention and disaster readiness were educational topics that local agencies and departments came out to help. The event also included safety demonstrations of their k-9 unit, fire extinguishers and crash simulations.
Fifth Annual Shine Mural Festival in St. Petersburg
The fifth annual Shine Mural Festival is taking place in St. Petersburg. Coordinated by Jenee Priebe of SHINE, 21 local, five international, and four national pieces of art will be featured.
They began painting last week and will finish by Oct. 26. The goal is to bring about awareness of the rundown areas of the city. The idea is to reveal more of the city’s creative side.
Thirty artists will be taking over the streets, and this year, more than a dozen murals are being added to the city’s outdoor gallery. Storefronts, small businesses, and apartment complexes are transformed into art.
