A nonprofit organization in Sarasota set up its annual art installation at Bayfront Park to promote diversity and creativity.
The Embracing Our Differences organization has been decorating Bayfront Park since 2004. The installation includes 50 billboard-sized works of art and a quote to go along with it submitted by people internationally.
“Our goal is to teach our kids the importance of treating one another with kindness and respect,” said Sarah Wertheimer, executive director of Embracing Our Differences.
Each year the theme is “enriching lives through diversity and inclusion.” This year, 17,413 people submitted art and quotes from all over the world. Since 2004, there has been a total amount of 3.7 million visitors to the exhibit.
“We end up getting incredible audience every year because people know that every year the artwork will be different. It’s always a reflection of what’s going on in the world around us,” Wertheimer said.
Along with having their art displayed publicly, people who submitted have the chance to win in categories such as “Best-In-Show Adult,” “Best-In-Show Student,” and “People’s Choice.” Adult winners win $1,000, while students who win get $1,000 to split between their school’s writing or art programs.
“I’m actually born and raised in Sarasota County, and I grew up in Sarasota County Public Schools. I saw and felt the need for more diversity and inclusion education. And so that’s what drew me to the organization originally,” said Wertheimer. “That’s what drives me every day to continue with our mission.”
The organization also has year-round education programs available for schools and students, as well as workshops that promote art appreciation, character building, and Social Emotional Learning. They also provide free field trips for classes to view the exhibit.
The Embracing Our Differences exhibit started Jan. 15 and runs until April 10. To find more information on on the event, submissions, or field trip registrations, visit the Embracing Our Differences website. The organization accepts donations to support the exhibit and its activities.
