Headmaster arrested
The headmaster at a Polk County school was arrested and accused of molesting a student, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s office. Charles Aguon II worked at Kingdom Preparatory School in Auburndale, Florida.
While being the school’s headmaster, he was also a football coach, taught 7th and 8th grade. Additionally, he was an ordained minister and an associate pastor.
“The victim was a student at the school, ” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a press conference Wednesday. “While Pastor Tiger (Aguon) was a role model he was grooming this boy and touching him in an inappropriate manner. We are significantly concerned and curious to know if there are any other victims. We want the parents and grandparents to speak with their children, ask them questions.”
Aguon is being held in jail without bond and is awaiting his first appearance in court.
Bad economy
Florida’s economy may be strong, but a deeper look by the United Way shows that some families are still struggling.
According to the study, 43% of families in the Tampa Bay market are struggling to make ends meet, which is an almost 8% increase since 2010.
Sixty-seven percent of Florida’s jobs pay less than $20 per hour, which adds up to about $42,000 per year. This figure is $18,000 short of the United Way’s “household survival” budget of $60,000 each year. The United Way is now calling for state lawmakers to address equitable economic growth.
“Although economic recovery is happening in our community, it’s not happening equally for everyone,” said United Way Suncoast CEO Suzanne McCormick in a statement.
Moms Demand Action
A group of activists is asking Florida lawmakers for more gun control. Moms Demand Action is headed to Tallahassee February 6 from Tampa.
They’re taking part in advocacy day at the state capitol. Organization officials said they want lawmakers to keep the laws that were put in place after the Parkland shooting last year.
Moms Demand Action also wants lawmakers to strike down bills that would arm teachers citing that the cost of doing so is “impractical.”
Super Bowl 2021 Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium will host Super Bowl LV in 2021
Tampa leaders are already gearing up to host Super Bowl LV in 2021. The big game could boost the local economy.
The Tampa Bay Sports Commission presented data February 6 to the Hillsborough County commissioners. Nearly half a billion dollars is projected to be pumped into Tampa’s economy.
In 2017 and 2018, host cities Houston and Minneapolis received an average of $439 million of economic impact because of their respective Super Bowls. Commissioners voted 6-1 Wednesday to provide $3 million of tax dollars to reimburse the Tampa Bay Super Bowl LV Host Committee for expenses marketing the event.
The last time the Super Bowl was hosted in Tampa was 2009, the marketing expenses were supported with $1.5 million of county taxes.
