Newsbreak: Presidential campaigns hustle to the finish line in Florida

Graphic that reads "St. Petersburg, FL earns distinction on the 2020 NAE Cities Index in these areas: Economic Prosperity, Livability, Civic Participation."

The presidential candidates along with their supporters are making one final lap around the battleground state of Florida to secure votes.

Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is hosting two events in the Tampa area on Wednesday to show support for the Democratic nominee.

The first is meant to appeal to Florida veterans to vote for Biden, who currently favor Trump, according to recent polls. And “Pride at the Polls,” titled purposefully to rally LGBTQ+ voters to vote blue, will be held Wednesday night in St. Petersburg.

President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden will be hosting separate rallies in Tampa Bay Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

A familiar face appeared in Orlando on Tuesday with former President Barack Obama hosting a drive-in rally to show support for Biden. The speech focused on the president’s handling of the pandemic and assuring the crowd of voters that Biden will offer a better alternative.

“He’s not going to screw up testing,” the former president told the audience. “He’s not going to call scientists idiots. He’s not going to host super-spreader events at the White House then take it on a tour across the country. Joe will get this pandemic under control.”

Metropolitan Ministries opens Holiday Tent to support families in need with volunteers, donations

With a global pandemic disrupting the livelihood of many Americans, Black Friday deals may not be top priority for many families this holiday season. Some may hope to have a proper Thanksgiving meal. Metropolitan Ministries hopes to offer a solution to these burdens.

The Holiday Tent hosted by Metropolitan Ministries offers food and toys to families in desperate need during the holidays.

There will be CDC guidelines set in place to keep the community protected according to President of Metropolitan Ministries Tim Marks.

“We are going to have a very safe environment for you, and we are going to help you at Thanksgiving and at Christmas time.”

Visit their website to find the donation wish list, as well as volunteer opportunities in both Hillsborough and Pasco County.

National Immigrants Day in St. Petersburg highlights city’s rank as No. 1 in Florida for newcomers

Wednesday is National Immigrants Day, and studies from 2018 and confirmed this year show that St. Petersburg is the number one city in Florida for immigrants.

Nearly 12 percent of St. Petersburg residents are immigrants, the city offering a multitude of cultural backgrounds in their restaurants alone.

St Petersburg resident Uma Kutty regards her own outlook on being an immigrant.

“I don’t see myself as an immigrant anymore other than the fact that I came here from somewhere else,” Kutty said. “I’ve lived here for so long. I left Malaysia when I was 18. It doesn’t even occur to me until somebody says to me, ‘Well where are you from? Because you have an accent.’ I don’t even think I do. I’m not surprised that there are so many like-minded people here.”
