Newsbreak: New vaccine opens new pool of recipients, including 50-and-over in key professions

Two vials with yellow caps of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Monday a shipment of 175,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine is expected to be brought to Florida later this week, one year after the first COVID-19 case was confirmed.

This is the third FDA-approved vaccine available for use, and it requires only one dosage compared with other vaccines, such as the Pfizer, which requires two.

“It doesn’t require any type of special freezing, or any freezing at all. You just put it in the refrigerator,” said DeSantis.

DeSantis also announced that the age range for those eligible will be lowered to 50+ and will include groups such as firefighters and teachers to accommodate the new vaccine shipment.

From humble beginnings, farm webpage connects consumers with farmers across Florida

Floridians now have access to a new way find produce through a new Facebook group called Florida Farm Finder.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been hard for many to get their preferred produce safely, due to food markets being disrupted and many people no longer grocery shopping regularly.

What started out as a local Facebook page has since expanded in popularity to necessitate a website, connecting those throughout the state of Florida with farmers of their desired product.

The page’s founders said that the increased revenue from the business the group generates will stimulate the economy of the state and provide more income for local farmers.

Great American Beach Cleanup underway in Pinellas County

Volunteers woke up at the brink of dawn Monday to participate in The Great American Beach Cleanup and picked up trash along the beaches in Pinellas County.

Running through May, the event focuses on removing trash and litter from beach coasts around the country in order to conserve and beautify the natural environment.

Last year, a quarter-million pounds of trash were removed from Florida waters alone.

The event in Florida is hosted by Keep Pinellas Beautiful, an organization not only dedicated to the cleanup of our natural landscape, but also for the education and empowerment of the volunteers and associates so they can see the impact they make on the community.
