Newsbreak: Medical marijuana bill aims to lower THC levels

Marijuana plants grow in large commercial greenhouse

A controversial medical marijuana bill that seeks to lower the amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was voted on in a Florida Legislature subcommittee Tuesday.

House Bill 1455 could cap the amount of THC being used in medical marijuana. Rep. Spencer Roach, R-Fort Myers, who sponsored the bill, claimed that there could be another drug-related crisis if they do not pass the bill.

“I will continue to fight to make FL’s medical marijuana program safe for patients and implement the will of Florida voters,” said Roach.

Opponents of the bill say that is just not true. Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services Nikki Fried said “House Bill 1455 is trying to cap THC levels and create new marijuana taxes while other states, like Virginia, are legalizing marijuana. Republicans in Florida are trying to turn back the clock.”

Other opponents of the bill have claimed that Roach’s accusation of medical marijuana leading to another opioid addiction crisis have no evidence to back them up.

Every Republican on the sub committee voted for Roach’s bill, while every Democrat voted against it. Roach’s bill still has a long way to go. It has not been heard by the Senate and still has to be heard by other House committees before a decision can be made.

Buyers beware: Tampa homes are a seller’s market

Strong demands for homes and a low interest rate has made Tampa one of the hottest places to sell your home.

Over 600 people moving to Florida every day, according to the latest U.S. Census poll. The demand helped fueled the highest home rates since 2006, according to the latest Elliman Market Report, which has turned Tampa into a seller’s market.

Now is the perfect time to sell a home in Tampa. Zillow even listed Tampa among the five markets it expects to be the hottest in 2021.

“It’s a good time to sell a house. If you’re in the market to buy a house right now, I’d kind of tell you to wait”, said Chris Jones, an economist.
