Newsbreak: Florida teachers expected to received the COVID-19 vaccines

Governor Ron DeSantis speaks at a news conference at a pharmacy

After months of waiting to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, teachers are finally in line for the opportunity to get vaccinated for the next round of doses.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Tuesday at a news conference that Florida will start the process of including teachers and law enforcement who are 50 and older.

“Seniors first of course, but we’re also are going to be able to offer for law enforcement, fire, classroom teachers with those federally supported sites coming online,” said DeSantis.

The union for Florida’s teachers said the move doesn’t go far enough. President Andrew Spar said in a Twitter post, “Lawmakers say they care about public education. If you care so much about public education, then take care of those on the frontline who are providing that education. Give us access to the vaccine now.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is looking for whoever is harming pelicans near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge by scalping them, an ongoing occurrence since January.

More than a dozen maimed birds have been found.

“I think we need to make sure that we are speaking up and standing up for those birds and others who can’t speak up for themselves.” St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said.

“They have had literally very specific shapes carved into their forehead area, literally like a knife, a clean edge and no other wound around it,” said Kim Begay, vice chair of the Friends of the Pelicans, Inc.
