Newsbreak: EPCOT hosts flower festival, including special food, drinks, entertainment

Many colors of flowers along a lagoon at EPCOT for the festival

Walt Disney World’s EPCOT kicks off the annual International Flower and Garden Festival this week. The 2021 festival is a four-month long event that provides guests with exotic gardens, topiaries of Disney characters, variety of foods, and much more.

Disney said the event will last until July 5. EPCOT’s park-wide event features food and drinks from Outdoor Kitchens, spring gardens from all over the world and live music.

From watching bees pollinating the flowers to eating the fresh ingredients many of these gardens are producing, fans of the park say Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival is a great way to kick-off the Spring season and enjoy cultures from all over the world.

Gun deaths impact Black communities disproportionately

More than 20 Black Americans die every day from guns, according to Everytown Research. Patricia Brown’s son, Devante Brown, was one of the lives taken by this daily occurrence.

“It’s hard how that happened,” Brown said. “Now I have to go and visit a grave where my child is buried.”

According to Everytown Research, the lack of funding in certain neighborhoods and cities escalates gun homicides, assaults, and police shootings in these areas. The little to no support for these areas intensifies the country’s long-standing racial injustice.

With the rise in gun violence it is essential to be informed on solutions that can lower the risk of being harmed by firearms. Everytown Research listed four solutions to this ongoing issue including violence intervention programs, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Assistance Funding, repealing Stand Your Ground laws, and helping to prevent gun trafficking.

Friday’s Florida Focus show will include a longer story about gun violence in the Black community and its solutions.
