Newsbreak: Citizens urged to vote as registration deadline looms Monday night

Joaquin Oliver, a Parkland shooting victim, is shown in AI in an ad against gun violence

The last day to register to vote in the presidential election Nov. 3 was Monday as both parties scrambled to get voters turned out.

There are 29 days until one of the most anticipated U.S. presidential elections in recent American history. Political figures and citizens alike are urging people to register to vote as the deadline to vote in the state of Florida is 11:59 tonight.

Florida is consistently an important state during elections as the candidate who won the Sunshine State nearly every year since the 1960s won the presidency.

Parkland shooting victim resurrected through AI in commercial

Artificial intelligence has played a key role in bringing back to life one of the students killed in the Feb. 2018 Parkland shooting by animating him into a political commercial.

The mission to vocalize the importance of eradicating school shootings is being carried out by an initiative called the Unfinished Votes project. Joaquin Oliver perished in the shooting but appears alive in the ad.

Two years ago, a deadly high school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL devastated the country. During the current election time, families of five students who where killed in the shooting have to unbearably deal with the fact that their children will never have the opportunity to vote.

Cassidy Herz is a USF student who also went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. She said her classmates who were killed don’t have the option to vote.

“You know, he cant vote, so we have to vote in honor of him, you know?” Herz said. “Change needs to happen.”
