Tampa Bay Community Mourns Pittsburgh Shooting Victims

Two local vigils were held on Monday to remember the 11 Jewish victims who were killed the preceding Saturday during Sabbath at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

The suspected gunman is Robert Browers.

A vigil was held at the University of South Florida’s Hillel Center at 6:30 p.m. and was open to the public.

The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is also holding a public event at The Larry Greenspon Family Campus for Jewish Life. The “Vigil for Tree of Life: A Community in Solidarity” begins at 7 p.m. Attendees must register online beforehand.

Unlicensed Contractors Arrested in Hillsborough County

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office arrested unlicensed contractors who were targeting the elderly.

16 contractors have been arrested and six others have charges pending. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says the contractors who were arrested provided services without proper licensing.

Detectives posed as homeowners needing house repairs and responded to ads.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff, Chad Chronister said homeowners should be cautious when hiring independent contractors.

“Unlicensed contractors are pretenders, if you choose to hire one, you’re inviting someone into your home who could be a convicted felon or fugitive.”

Award Raised for information about Murdered Clearwater Couple

The family of a murdered Clearwater couple raised their reward amount to $25,000 for any information regarding the deaths of Mina, 80, and David Swan, 88. This reward is in addition to Crime Stoppers of Pinellas County’s existing $3,000 reward.

The couple were found dead in their home September 29. Police officials said the murders could have happened on Sept. 27 or Sept. 28.

Adventure Island Opens Park for K-9 Training

Adventure Island gave law enforcement K-9s and their handlers the chance to train in the water park’s pools. The park’s wave pool and kid-friendly splash zone staged scenarios like catching suspects who might have jumped into the water.

Tampa Police officials said it’s important for K-9s to be prepared for aquatic situations, especially in the Tampa Bay Area.
