The New England Patriots have traded tight end Rob Gronkowski and a seventh-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft.
For Patriots fans, its heart aching news to say the least as arguably the most dominant Quarterback, Tight-End duo reunite in another city.
Garrett Stepien of 247sports reports:
“After NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported Tuesday afternoon that Rob Gronkowski told the New England Patriots of his interest in playing football again, and how he prefers to do so with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Tom Brady, news unfolded rapidly on the five-time Pro Bowl tight end’s potential return. Gronkowski, a nine-year veteran with the Patriots from 2010-18, contacted the Patriots about his desire to come back and he was dealt to the Buccaneers within the hour.”
Buccaneer fans should be estatic as Brady and Gronk will add to a talented receiving core featuring Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, both recording 1,000 receivng yard seasons in 2019.
Gronk responded on Instagram expressing the appreciation for his time in New England and the exciting new chapter ahead in Tampa.
The news of Gronk reuniting with Brady in Tampa Bay was followed by the MLB stripping the Red Sox of a second-round draft pick this year for stealing signs.
“Major League Baseball on Wednesday suspended Red Sox video replay system operator J.T. Watkins without pay through the 2020 postseason and stripped the team of its second-round draft pick this year after completing an investigation into allegations that Boston stole signs during the 2018 season.”
Former Red Sox manager Alex Cora is suspended through the 2020 postseason as well with his part in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.
Red Sox fans expressed frustration with the franchise in February after ownership traded, Mookie Betts, the 2018 MVP, and pitcher David Price, a five-time All-Star who won the AL Cy Young in 2012.
Despite a loyal fan base, as Boston Sports Journal reported the ball club should be concerned as they traded two beloved and prominent players.
“The team ranked among the top 10 in total attendance in 2019, surpassing such large markets as Houston, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Among the top 10 markets, Boston was one of five that reported an increase in attendance from 2018.”
