Hurricane Michael missing Tampa.
Hurricane Michael is sparing the Bay Area for the most part. But even without a direct hit Deputy Emergency Manager, Michael Ryan, says we have to stay diligent.
“This is October, this is where these storms have a tendency to generate,” says Ryan. “This is our biggest threat.”
As the hurricane strikes to the Northwest the Bay Area is starting to feel its effects. Storm surge is at its highest at high tide and the bay area experienced some flooding earlier today.
Florida Supreme Court nominees.
Governor Rick Scott is on the hunt for three replacement Florida Supreme Court Justices. Before he leaves office in January, Scott will narrow down his choices from 59 applicants.
Among the 59, six are Tampa Bay locals. Tomorrow the Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission will decide who advances in the process.
New medical device.
A local cardiologist has invested sixty-million dollars in a medical device company. Kiran Patel is moving the company headquarters to Tampa.
The money will support clinical testing of a new heart device which Patel says will be especially helpful to diabetic patients.
Stone crab season.
Hurricane Michael isn’t bringing all bad news. The storm waters may increase the stone crab harvest and crabbers have begun setting traps for the season.
Scientists and crabbers are hoping the storm will break up red tide. There’s been concern that red tide could have a negative effect on the season.
