Hillsborough County school officials continue discussing Scenario 4, the latest plan to rezone and balance over- and under-populated schools, adjust grade levels and lower distance to and from schools.

Superintendent Addison Davis told participants in a town hall Wednesday that he wants to get the balance just right. The crowd at Webb Middle School had lots of concerns with the latest scenario. Many felt that influential South Tampa residents got their way and got Scenario 3 put aside in favor 4, which is not as favorable to some in other parts of the county.

“South Tampa got their way. They came out of nowhere and told the superintendent what
they wanted, and they got what they wanted. They are overcrowded too, but now he is saying the threshold is at 110 percent and they’re at 103 percent,” said Lisa Sampson, a Hillsborough County resident.

Elena Luyo said, ” Folks are not happy with scenario 4. It looks like it splits families up.”

The county is hoping that this plan will save it $12 million. The school board plans to build a new high school to balance out the student population, as well.

This plan will take effect next year. According to the school board, 15,000 children would have to unfortunately move schools.

There will be another meeting to discuss the scenario on Feb. 28.

Change is coming to a Tampa park near you

Tampa City Council members have approved $3.3 million in funds to the parks and recreation department.

This will improve accessibility within Tampa’s community redevelopment areas. A five-year plan improving these areas will soon kick off.

Wheelchair accessibility and autism-friendly playgrounds are the improvements that this plan will be focused on.

This change comes just after the success from the Temple Terrace baseball field for children with special needs.
