Hillsborough air quality alert issued

Tampa air quality map, Oct. 3

If you stepped outside today, you are probably wondering why the Tampa Bay skies are so hazy.

The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert this morning for Hillsborough residents, stating that sensitive groups such as elderly people and young children should avoid staying outdoors until midnight.

According to the NWS, the haze originates from the smoke of the Canada wildfires, which has traveled South and now reached Florida.

Hazy conditions are expected to remain for the next few days, but should clear out by the end of the week.

Golf cart safety bill in effect

A new bill went into effect on Oct. 1, aiming to increase regulations for golf cart drivers throughout the state.

House Bill 949 requires drivers under 18 to have a valid learner’s permit, and adult drivers to have a valid government issued I.D.

Previously, underage drivers were not required to have a learner’s permit to operate golf carts.

The bill also gives water control districts the ability to designate areas for golf cart operation, requiring approval from the county.

Data from the American Academy of Pediatrics indicates that approximately 6500 children are hurt every year in accidents involving golf carts.

Authorities expect this number to fall with the passing of this new bill.

FAFSA application form updated

The notoriously overcomplicated FAFSA application form is undergoing some changes that will benefit students.

According to the Department of Education, the new form will be simplified, expand eligibility and make the process more streamlined.

Applicants will be able to fill out the form starting Dec. 1.
