Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to commence Phase 3 several weeks ago has impacted business owners. Heidy Correa, owner of Capricho’s Deli Coffee on E. Busch Boulevard, is dealing with the risks and challenges it has caused.

“For restaurants that are of smaller capacity, it has been very uncomfortable trying to maintain safe distancing,” said Correa. “People don’t want to understand the measures being taken.”

Correa urges customers to wear masks and practice social distancing while in her restaurant. This has caused struggles due to customers being defiant.

“Even people that are repeat customers, that we know well, I have to tell them to put their masks on and to be cautious with distancing,” said Correa. “That has been the most complicated problem.”

Phase 3 permits restaurants, bars, and other businesses to reopen at full capacity. After the governor’s announcement, several counties decided to repeal their mask mandate allowing people to enter indoor locations without face-coverings. This has caused problems for establishments in counties where mask mandates are still in order, such as Hillsborough County where Correa’s shop does business..

“There are people who have been staying home, they have not gone out and interacted with others in a long time,” said Correa. “As soon as they see these changes, they’re going to fly out.”
