National Voter Registration Day
With Election Day only six weeks away, organizations in the Tampa Bay area have been reaching out to citizens to help them with the voter registration process.
Florida PIRG, a non-partisan group, visited the University of South Florida campus to give new voters a chance to register and appeal to younger voters.
“Our democracy really works best when everyone participates and weighs in on who gets elected,” said Marion Kinosian, a member of the New Voters Project with Florida PIRG.
Students are encouraged to register to vote using their on-campus address to have the ability to vote on campus on election day. Students living off campus will be able to vote at their designated polling station.
Hillsborough County is the fourth largest county in Florida and currently has more than 800,000 registered voters.
The deadline to register in this years General Election is Oct. 9. Early voting will begin Oct. 22 and polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Deadliest Region for Bicycle Riders
A newly released study by the Wall Street Journal showed that the Tampa Bay area is the deadliest region for bicycle riders in the United States.
Pinellas County has the highest per capita cyclist death rate of the counties in the Tampa Bay area. The next three deadliest regions in the country are Jacksonville, Orlando, and Miami.
Experts suggest that texting while driving and alcohol are the most common reasons for accidents involving bicyclists. Tourists that are unfamiliar with local roadways are also a cause of these accidents.
The information for the study was compiled by federal data.
Elderly Woman Target of Home Burglary
Two men who robbed an elderly woman are still on the loose.
New surveillance video was released today showing the suspects following the woman inside her home. One man distracted the victim while the other stole her belongings, including coins and jewelry.
They were seen leaving in a dark-colored Ford Explorer. The 92-year-old victim was robbed in July after the men offered to pressure wash her house and asked her about buying a vehicle that was for sale in her front yard.

Amara La Negra Visits USF
The University of South Florida is kicking off its lecture series tonight in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month with guest speaker Amara La Negra.
The event will be held at the University of South Florida Marshall Student Center Oval Theater at 8 p.m.
La Negra is a Dominican-American who grew up in Miami and is known as a star on the show Love and Hip Hop: Miami.
She has been named one of Billboard’s artists on the rise and has appeared on the cover of People Magazine. La Negra has also attended the Latin Grammys and Lo Nuestro Awards.
Her lecture will focus on challenges she faces as an Afro-Latina entertainer, including sexism, classism, colorism and racism.
The event is on a first-come, first-serve basis and is free for students and the public to attend.
