Fatal Car Accident
A head-on car accident in Lakeland claimed the lives of four people earlier today.
The accident happened around noon when a silver sedan crossed into an oncoming lane at the 1700 block of Memorial Boulevard. The sedan crashed into a truck towing a horse trailer.
Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, and another was pronounced dead at the hospital. All of the victims were in the sedan.
The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital as a precaution. There was no horse in the trailer attached to the truck.
Police encouraged drivers to avoid the area for at least three hours to investigate the accident.
Data Breach
The city of St. Petersburg is warning residents about a data breach involving credit card information.
The breach affects customers who pay their city bills and fees online through a third-party vendor called Click2Gov. Click2Gov informed the city of malicious software detected on the server last week.
The breach occurred from Aug. 11 through Sept. 25. The city has since shut down the breached website and has launched a new system that became fully operational on Sept. 28.
City officials are urging residents to keep an eye on their financial accounts if they believe they used the system during the breach period. Residents who suspect they might be affected may also contact the three U.S. credit reporting agencies to receive free credit reports.
Any payments collected in person, over the phone, or via E-Check are not impacted by the data breach. For more information about the breach, visit this website.
Rays Buy Rowdies
The Tampa Bay Rays announced earlier today that they are purchasing the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Rowdies owner Bill Edwards explained why he sold the team to the Rays at a press conference.
“I wanted to keep it local, I wanted to keep it in town, I wanted to keep it here,” said Bill Edwards.
With the purchase agreement, the Rowdies will stay in St. Pete for at least five more years. The deal will be finalized at the end of the Rowdies’ season, which ends on Oct. 14.
The Rays will become the third major league baseball team to buy a soccer club.
Senator Debate Tonight
Senator Bill Nelson and Governor Rick Scott will face off in their first televised debate tonight. The candidates will be meeting face-to-face for the first time.
Scott has reached his term limit as governor, while Nelson is seeking his fourth Senate term. Bill Nelson has not participated in a television debate since 2012.
Rick Scott’s last televised debate was against Charlie Christ during his governor reelection. Scott has previously called Nelson a “do-nothing” Senator, while Nelson has called out Scott for not telling the truth.
