Cold cases cracked open at Missing in Florida Day

USF researchers alongside local law-enforcement are gathering today to host the second annual Missing in Florida Day.

The event aims at raising awareness of the people who are missing, and helping families get closure on the status of their missing relatives.

Data from the National Crime Information Center shows that over 3200 people are reported as missing in Florida. Over 900 of these are labeled as John/Jane Doe.

Organizers hope to be able to identify some of these missing individuals with the help of their families and friends.

Attendance is free and anyone affected is encouraged to attend. Families are also encouraged to bring anything that could aid investigators in finding their missing relatives, such as photographs and previous police reports.

The event takes place today from noon to 6 p.m. at the Italian Club of Tampa in Ybor city.

New business in Lutz giving Christmas cheer

A unique indoor playground in Lutz, MilestoneZone is finding ways to give back to the community.

MilestoneZone is gathering toy donations for families in need. They are also allowing kids to use the playground free of charge for one hour.

According to owner Jerica Ramirez, over 45 families have reached out in need of Christmas gifts for their kids. She is thankful for the opportunity of giving back.

“I’ve always wanted to help people whether its providing the gym for kids with disabilities or those in need. And I feel like Christmas is a very magical time. We all can remember those days when we open up presents and just had an amazing time.” said Ramirez.

She aims to make this a tradition, so that every year less families will feel stressed around Christmas time.

“Milestonzone is only eight months old. We opened February 6 of this year, so I will make it an annual thing. That is my goal.” said Ramirez.

Donations can be dropped off at 18455 Highway 41 in Lutz.
