It has been almost one year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but U.S. President Joe Biden recently made a surprise visit to the country.
Biden arrived in Kyiv to discuss with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky ways that the U.S. would continue supporting the country in the war. This visit marks the first time that a U.S. president had visited Ukraine since George W. Bush met with President Yushchenko and Prime Minister Tymoshenko in 2008, according to Office of the Historian.
Biden’s talk with Zelensky saw him discuss providing additional military equipment to the country, such as artillery ammunition and air surveillance radars. He also said that they would be providing sanctions against companies in support of Russia.
National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said in a press release, “As we approach the one-year mark since this invasion, we can proudly say that our support for Ukraine remains unwavering, and our alliances and our international coalition in support of Ukraine remains stronger than ever.”
Kirby later said during a press briefing that Biden would be meeting on Wednesday with NATO allies to reaffirm the alliance’s security, and “continue our unwavering support for Ukraine.”
