Armed Standoff

An armed standoff ended after a man shot and killed himself.

Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Deputies said they responded to a home in the 2800 block of 60th Ave. N after receiving a domestic battery call shortly before midnight.

Upon arrival, deputies said they spoke with the victim who told them her boyfriend, 43-year-old Joseph Robinson, grabbed her by her hair, threw her on the bed and hit her multiple times. She told deputies Robinson was inside the home with a gun.

Deputies evacuated eight people who were inside the home. While deputies and SWAT members communicated with Robinson, who told them he was not coming out of his bedroom to speak with them, they heard a gunshot.

For more than four hours of trying to communicate, deputies entered the home and found Robinson dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

If you or someone you know may be a victim of domestic violence, call the 1-800-500-1119 hotline to connect with experts at the DV center located nearest you. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255.

Arming Teachers

A Florida House committee voted Thursday for a broad school safety bill that would expand an existing guardian program to allow classroom teachers to volunteer to carry weapons on campus if local school boards approve.

The proposal builds on a law passed last year after the Parkland shooting that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Teachers would not be required to carry guns, but those who volunteer would have to undergo 144 hours of firearms training, possess a valid concealed weapon permit and pass a drug test and psychological evaluation.

The main sponsor, Republican Rep. Jennifer Sullivan of Eustis, said the intent is not to force any teacher to carry a gun but allow those who volunteer and are qualified to improve safety in public schools. The Senate has a similar bill moving through committees.
