Florida’s election results trigger vote recount

The election results for the U.S. Senate and Florida Agriculture Commissioner, as well as other smaller races, has triggered a recount — both being decided by less than 0.5 percent.

Gov. Rick Scott was ahead of Sen. Bill Nelson in the U.S. Senate race by 34,435 votes and Rep. Matt Caldwell ahead of Nicole “Nikki” Fried by just 12,521 votes.

If the votes are that close, then every vote is critical, such as overseas and military ballots, provisional ballots and vote by mail ballots that have a missing or non-matching signature.

The voter recount process could take weeks, but some are hopeful for a different outcome from the recount.

Several sheriff offices responded to Fox Chapel Middle School just before 9:45 a.m. Deputies said a suspicious package was found in front of the school and the building was evacuated.

An hour later, the sheriff announced that the scene was clear and students were back in class.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis said an electronic device had been run over by a car and placed on top of a trash can. Another employee found the device and called in the report.
